NZHerald runs a story about a former policeman who puts his 1981 Springbok Tour aluminium baton up for auction on TradeMe. This weapon became as infamous as the men and one woman of Red Squad who wielded the baton in a blaze of blood throughout the 1981 Springbok Tour.

Insensitive mesothelioma compensation to living victim's estate on 31-Mar-2005 by AnonyMouse
Stuff.co.nz reports a dying Aucklander Victor Angell is calling for ACC to be more sensitive after it mailed his "estate" a compensation cheque to settle his asbestos claim. ACC accepted last year that Angell, 69, has mesothelioma (a cancer of the lung lining) as a result of dealing with asbestos as a carpenter from 1951 to 1972. He recalls spraying asbestos in firebreaks in Auckland buildings without wearing masks as it was not then known what effects the substance could have.

Stickers at cemetery upset families on 31-Mar-2005 by AnonyMouse
NZHerald reports a widow has accused city council cemetery staff of insensitivity after they threatened to remove terracotta pots from her husband's grave, saying they were a health and safety risk. Easter visitors to the Newstead cemetery found hundreds of stickers pasted on pots, crosses, rocks and bowls with the message: "Please contact manager at administration office, as items will be removed."

The Daily Orange reports Harvard President Larry Summers has come under fire for comments he made last month in which he entertained the idea that women might not have the same level of "intrinsic aptitude" in those fields as men, and that issues of socialization and discrimination were secondary to biology in explaining the lack of women in those professions.
